NBHA

2019-2020 Futurity / Breeders Championship / Puppy Classic

This year's event was held on the manicured grounds of Palmetto Quail Club in Pamplico, S. C., owned by gracious owner, Rodney Poston. Rodney shared his property to allow NBHA an opportunity to expand participation on what may be one of the largest walking trials in some fifty years.

The combination of superior grounds, perfect weather, enormous prize structure, successful track record of record-breaking entries set the stage for the best of the best to go head to head in competition.

A total of 117 dogs competed in the three-stake event, solidifying the largest walking field trial in many, many years.

Many stepped forward to assure the event ran flawlessly, but none compared to Warren Parrott of Scranton, S. C. From the inception two years ago while discussing the possibility of relocating the Futurity to South Carolina in 2020, Warren was always supportive, and personally managed every detail to perfection. Anytime a question or idea was initiated, Warren stated "I'll take care of that".

Many guests traveled from various parts of the Country. Warren provided five or six ATV / UTV's so guests would have an opportunity to see the trial and enjoy the festivities. So again, thank you Warren Parrott, for your support, attention to detail, endless sharing of equipment, opening your clubhouse for a handler appreciation dinner. This trial's success was largely because of your giving nature.

Another deserving individual who works endlessly year after year is Brian Casey, with assistance from his wife Georgie Casey. Brian is personally secured many of the sponsors of the Futurity and is the primary workhorse for daily efficiency assuring the trial operates seamlessly and without fault. Thanks, Brian, for the endless and thankless super small details you endure to assure the Futurity is a success. It cannot be done without you.

I want to personally thank Senior Judge Quintin Wiseman for his endless dedication and undivided attention during the Futurity, Open Invitational Championship and Jerry Kilgore Puppy Classic. This was Quintin's second year in a row judging at this venue because of his integrity, honesty, and experience.

We also want to thank Tony Bingham who graciously stepped in to judge the Puppy Classic with Quintin. A few unforeseen and unexpected judicial adjustments were addressed from the advertised panel.

Others who played a major part of the success were Dave Emert who handled bird planting everyday to assure each brace received equal and consistent opportunity; Stanley McCain, Bob Little, Danny Bardwell, Lindsey Wagner, Rodney Poston, Oscar Whitt, Mike Fox, Karl Foresburg and several others assisted with dog wagon duties and any other chores requested by club officials.

A special thanks to Allen Johnson and Cliff for preparation of daily lunches, as well as Teddy Poston who also provided a complementary lunch on Sunday for all attending.

NBHA founding member and NBHA Hall of Fame member, John Everett, visited and paid for lunch for all participants displaying his gratitude and support for of the NBHA Futurity.

Field trials cannot be successfully advertised and administered without support of those sponsors who donate to our cause. We were excited to have Kelsi Toht of Purina who took time out of her schedule to attend the handlers dinner as well as visit a few days at the trial. Her willingness to visit and mingle with many of our participants was appreciated by club officials.

Also contributing as sponsors were Garmin, Gun Dog Supply, Mule Clothing and Gundog Central. Their contributions and support are greatly appreciated. In efforts to increase the prize structure, we solicit donations for auction from generous NBHA Futurity supporters. We again wish to thank those who support our efforts: Boss Kennels, Chase Motor Sports, Daryl Thomas Jr, Ed Marron, Hirollin Kennels, Jamie Nee, Ken Black, Mary McPherson Art, McKinney's Western Wear, Oscar Whitt Kennels, Powerhouse Kennels, Premier Kennels, Rhett Kermicle Kennels, Rolling Rock Hunting Preserve, Royal Rock Farm, Shawn Kinkelaar, The Saddle Guy, Tom Brigman, Union Level Leather and Wright Kennels.

Over the past four years since the new inception and implementation of much larger prize structure, each year we have witnessed an increase in litter enrollment nomination, more donations to the Futurity, and increased buzz surrounding the Futurity itself.

Litter enrollment for the Futurity of dogs born during 2018 were thirty-six (36) English Pointers, sixteen (16) English Setters, two (2) Irish Setters and one (1) German Shorthaired Pointer, bringing a total of fifty-five (55) litter nominations for Futurity dogs alone.

In the Jerry Kilgore Puppy Classic, for pups born in 2020, there were twenty-three (23) English Pointers, six (6) English Setters and one (1) Irish Setter, bringing the Puppy total to thirty (30) litter nominations for the Jerry Kilgore Puppy Classic. A combined eighty-five (85) litters were nominated for competition in this years events. Another record setting achievement.

During the 2020 NBHA Futurity, Jerry Kilgore Puppy Classic and Open Invitational, cash prizes exceeding $7,000 were divided between handlers, owners and breeders for their dogs placing in these stakes.

INVITATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The winner of the Open Invitational Championship was Hellbound, handled by Harry Cook III, who was unable to cash-in on the owner bonus money, as a result of Hellbound not participating in the Futurity during his Derby season. Therefore, the owner bonus money will remain at $2,000 if the Open Invitational Breeders Champion at the 2021 Championship competed in a NBHA Futurity.

The Open Invitational Championship consisted of one-hour heats. An overwhelming draw of 45 dogs qualified by being awarded a placement last season in an NBHA Open Shooting Dog stake, or by having a Field Dog Stud Book recognized placement from an NBHA nominated litter.

The Palmetto Quail Club venue offers the exact challenge club officials were in search of. Large field edges bordered with planted feed strips allowed ample location and birdy objectives during the entire hour. The challenge came when dogs entered the planted pine sections of the course and had to change their hunting pattern for approximately twenty minutes; however, this allowed judges to determine a true hunting dog that could make adjustments and not just run an edge or service road. Those who chose not to dig in and hunt were often lost or did not return.

To culminate the course, dogs re-entered the field section to display their ability to finish going away. For some, this would be too much of a challenge with limited finishing determination left in the tank.

During our week visit, there were times where eight to ten bird contacts were not uncommon.

The winner came out of the 20th brace where Harry Cook III handled Hellbound to a captivating performance. Hellbound is a big, well-built white and liver male sired by Knight's White Light and the dam of record, Pine Hollow Belle.

Hellbound is a rather young dog with a whelping date of August 26, 2016.

Harry has been tutored by South Carolina veteran Warren Parrott who enticed Harry to begin field trialing and Harry has bit the hook.

Harry and Hellbound were in perfect unison, casting from left to right far ahead then slamming into point where birds were expertly located.

Hellbound was credited with seven flawless finds. His race was big in the fields but shortened as he should in the piney woods responding to Harry's commands. When it was time to finish, Hellbound did in a big way.

At the 52-minute mark we reentered the field section of the course where Hellbound reached far ahead with a four or five hundred yard cast that sealed the deal. The bar was set, and nothing that finished was even close to this performance.

Runner-up was awarded to ever worthy Bobby Phillips of Jonesborough, Tenn. Bobby handled Bob's Elhew Holly, for which he raised; who is sired by Elhew Moneymaker; dam of record is Bob's Miller Daisy.

Holly is an attractive eight-year-old, white and liver female born on June 3, 2013. Holly was credited with four finds and one back. Holly responded to each of Bobby's commands with clear intention, always forward, snappy and classy on the ground with great application. Holly was off the pace during the piney woods section but regained strength to finish in the fields with going away casts.

JERRY D. KILGORE PUPPY CLASSIC WINNERS

It was decided for efficiency sake and to assure that each puppy entered received equal and fair judgment that braces would be run on an out and back course. This allowed the same course to be used to evaluate each contender.

Thirty-six puppies entered the Kilgore Puppy Classic, the largest number is nearly thirty years. The judges mentioned there were several pups they think have a great career ahead of themselves but were limited to naming only four winners.

The winner came from brace No. 2, where Sam Ridings handled Rayl's Braveheart for owner Fred Rayl to the number one spot. Braveheart is a nice big white and orange male pup Sired by Allegretto's Ralphie; dam of record is Caladen's River Hawk.

Braveheart ran a forward reaching race with super animation who went to all the birdy objectives yet handled when called upon.

Second was awarded to Firebug, handled by Justin Crook for owner Charles Maxson of Clearwater, Kan. Firebug has had a phenomenal puppy season as has many of her littermates. The beautiful English setter is sired by Bugs N Dirt and dam of record is Iron Afire.

Big forward reaching casts with hightailing action was typical during this brace. Firebug would respond with Justin's call, bending and handling to the front. I expect much more success from this young female.

Third was awarded to Harry Cook III, with his pointer male Chicken On A Chain, sired by BK Pablo Escobar; dam of record is BK Miss Mille.

This pup came from Boss Kennels in Canada who is producing top quality pups. He posted a strong forward, hard charging race that is sure to be a contender at the next level.

Fourth place went to the ever consistent Hirollins BK Frankenstein owned and handled by Warren Parrott. This white and orange pointer male is sired by Fastforward's BK Gunner; dam of record is Wiggins Miss Stella. This pup is also from Boss Kennels.

Warren has another winner on his hands here as Frankie possesses all the tools with far reaching casts with unlimited style. This name will be heard from again.

NBHA FUTURITY

The prestigious juvenile event known as The Futurity attracted a record-setting 36 of the best Derby aged dogs from all prats of the Country.

In the initial thirty-minute series offered the out and back combination for efficiency as time became a factor during the week-long trial. In the initial series, the goal was to find the top ten dogs for the callback then test their skills on the Championship course.

The final series challenged the Derbies in one-hour heats.

The callback dogs were: Lincoln County Ballerina handled by Gary Whitworth, the top qualifying dog, paired with Lucky Recharge handled by Earl Drew; Hirollins Hot Diggity Dog, handled by Warren Parrott, and Caird's Crackin Rosie handled by Bob Little; Foresberg's Hello Dolly, handled by Karl Foresberg, and Indian Creek Storm Chaser, handled by Garry Malzone; Foxy Abralena, handled by Tom Waite, and Caird's Your So Vain, handled by Bob Little; Black River Sue, handled by Sean Melvin, and Triple L,s Ben, handled by Tony Bingham.

The winner came from the second brace Hirollins Hot Diggity Dog, the best Derby of the stake.

Ace, as he is called is owned and handled by Warren Parrott of Scranton S.C. Bred by Sam Handous of Edmonton, Alberta, Ace had five well mannered finds, strong forward race with unmatched style. There was no question Ace was clearly the winner, far above all others.

Second was Indian Creek Storm Chaser, handled by Garry Malzone. He is a white and orange male was bred by Jillian Sturh of Franklin, N. J. He was snappy, and displayed a big forward race, but was unresponsive to handler a few times, requiring assistance from the scout to keep on course.

Third was awarded to Triple L's Ben, white and liver male pointer, owned by Leland L. Laymon of Raleigh, N.C.

Bred by Bill Adams of Mount Holly, N.C., Ben was handled by Tony Bingham. Ben was credited with a ten-find performance, showing he is ready for the next level. As expected, his race was not as far reaching as desired, yet he was rewarded with find after find. Only a few minor acceptable Derby mistakes kept Ben from a higher placement.

The fourth place dog was Forsberg's Hello Dolly, bred, owned and handled by Karl Forsberg of Lexington, S.C.

Dolly is a very nice dog, classy with great ground application. Dolly was credited with two finds, two true stops to flush and one back. In the middle of the course she became lateral and had difficulty regaining the front for a short stint of time, then faced with uncalled-for actions from the opposing handler that was borderline interference.

Her absence from the front during her lateral movement kept her from higher placement. Dolly is no stranger to the winners circle and will be there again real soon.
