The weekend of September 25-26 2010 turned out to be another unusual weather and water experience for trialers along the ever unpredictable Stranger Creek north of Tonganoxie, KS. This time, the Stranger Creek bottoms had been quite dry until approximately six inches of rain fell in the watershed over the week preceding the trial. While Big Stranger did not exit its banks, the water level rose by Saturday to the point of pushing water backwards up the old oxbow lake causing us to wade and dogs to hop thru several fairly deep crossings. Handlers and dogs seemed to keep their sense of humor and composure though as temperatures were not too unpleasant. We had a little light rain mixed in Saturday afternoon and then Sunday dawned to a beautiful fall day. When we turned the dogs loose, it was as if a drain plug had been pulled and all the standing water was gone! Again, Stranger Creek upheld the unpredictability that led the Delaware Indians to label the creek as “it was a Stranger to them”.
The Open Shooting Dog stake was competitive with LG Barnard’s young pointer female Jet running a hustling race with solid bird work to take first. The Open Derby stake was won by Jason Patty’s new setter prospect Scout running a forward race with good handle and a single well handled find. A great group of ten puppies were run with Jason again annexing first with Paige after a jumping race thru the water and fields. On Sunday, the Amateur Shooting Dog stake was won by John Hortin who recently got Handsome Jack back from his trip to Canada with Robin Gates. John also took first in the other Amateur Shooting Dog stake with Doc Susie having good bird work to go with a solid hunting race This final placement gave John a total of three on an active weekend. Thanks to our judges, Skip Wonnell from McLouth, KS who along with his wife Laurie runs Vizslas across the Midwest and Jake Sloan from St. Joe, MO who currently competes in horseback stakes with his winning setter female Lily. Brian Jones, Tom Lyles and Bruce Hoffman all pitched in to plant birds, help keep dogs on the line, handlers picked up and generally do all it takes to put on a trial.
Thanks to our sponsors Purina Pro Plan for providing food coupons to our winners and ad support to the NBHA. It was good to see everyone again after the summer and to kick off the trial season in Kansas. We hope to see all of you down the road.
