The NBHA Futurity program made two major changes for the 2013 renewal with the appointment of Kevin Western of Queen City, MO as new Futurity Chairman and the relocation of the trial to the Whetstone Quail Demonstration area east of Columbia at Williamsburg, MO. These were major changes and the Futurity Board of Directors thought long and hard about the effects of moving the Futurity from its home at the Percy Priest WMA near Nashville, TN. In the end, the moves were made and a new tradition started at the very nice grounds set up by the Missouri Conservation Board right along Interstate 70 some 80 miles west of St. Louis. Entries at this renewal were reasonable considering the change in venue and distance from its long standing location in Middle Tennessee. New participants from the Midwest attended and stalwarts from previous renewals continued to nominate litters and attended to run their Derbies and puppies. The Futurity paperwork and litter nomination process for the breeders was well managed by Kevin Western and the trial was very well organized under Kevin’s leadership with major assistance from NBHA Vice President Tim Penn. Larry Carpenter, Joe Zimmer and others all pitched in to make sure the trial was run smoothly and everyone had a fair chance and a good time.

There is a saying in Wisconsin that if you do not like the weather, just wait an hour and it will change. Well, we have been waiting for months and finally got a nice reprieve. The snow and ice stopped, somewhat warmer weather finally came and dried up the grounds, thank you Mother Nature! The 2013 NBHA Northeast Regional Championship was held Aril 4-7th at the Pine Island Wildlife Area near Portage, WI. These are some nice, relatively flat grounds with sufficient water and the opportunity to really show a dog.

We had a beautiful day for a field trial, cool morning and temperatures up to 60 in the evening. We got started about 7:45 and didn’t finish until dark. Thanks to everyone for all their help.

The event is coming upon us quickly. We have two Championships this week. We'll start off with the Region 7 Amateur Walking Shooting Dog Ch. and move right into the NBHA Nat'l Amateur Championship.

We would like to thank everyone who entered a dog in this year’s trial. We are very pleased with what we have accomplished so far with this year being the first year in Missouri. We plan on starting on Thursday, March 21. We will run at least 6 braces of the shooting dog with 7 on stand by. We will finish the shooting dogs Friday Morning and then run the Derby in the afternoon. Depending on how the running goes we would like the first two braces of puppies ready to run on Friday Evening. We will finish up the puppies on Saturday Morning and run the finals of the Futurity on Saturday afternoon. We plan to finish up Saturday evening. If we run into any issues with this plan we will run the finals of the Derby on Sunday Morning.
